People always use dyslexia as an excuse for AI like chatGPT which I genuinely find infuriating. As someone with dyslexia who’s also currently writing a comic, it really feels more like an insult than anything else. The idea that, because of a problem in my brain, it’s not worth trying and I’d be better having someone else write my story for me. But let me explain it a different way. When I was little I had spelling sheets that I had to do every week as homework, and every Friday there was a spelling test that contained all the words on the sheets. I always did the homework but I always failed the tests. Why? Because every week I would cheat on the spelling sheets, I’d write the answers without trying to remember them. I didn’t want it to be hard I wanted it to be easy so I never learned how to spell in school. With ChatGPT it’s more akin to me asking a computer to write a story for me. Which (just like cheating on my homework) would not help me improve. Something everyone can do. Even if you have a learning disability that specifically targets the parts of your brain that deal with language. I’ve improved so much since I was a kid that hated English. That improvement is what you are robbing yourself of if you get someone else to do it for you. I’m not saying accessibility tools don’t matter but those tools should facilitate your improvement by specifically helping to mediate some of the actual symptoms of your condition. Like a prosthetic might help a person missing a leg to walk, my screen reader helps me to understand what I’ve written in the way that non dyslexics can understand their own writing. These tools help you by putting you in a position to improve on your own. ChatGBT doesn’t want you to improve at all. TLDR: dyslexia isn’t an excuse for stealing other people’s work, in-fact doing so prevents you from improving your own writing.
