I hate to bring it to Neil this bluntly, but he's utterly wrong on the subject of potential unemplyment once (or if) AGI ever comes to existence and functions well on a broad scale. He argues that former technological improvements haven't caused any major unemployment waves, so this AI trend won't do it as well. The problem is that this comparison is false, because the previous major technological improvements like electricity, cars or computers gave birth to an entire new (and often multiple) industries and companies, while the rise of AI probably won't. It will just replace, not shift towards something new. Once the car was invented, the horsecarer was replaced with a car mechanic, but which jobs will emerge once AGI takes over hundreds of millions of employees worldwide in nearly all sectors (only excepting physical labour, at least for the time being)? The current AI industry is basically just making itself grow and hollow out at the same time. All the technicians working on these algorithms are more or less digging their own hole, as the vast majority will be redundant once it's mostly finished. The metaphor that comes to my mind is of the cook who's creating an oven so capable and independent that it could make any dish you'd ever want at a perfect quality and on a large scale as well. This super oven would make the cook utterly redundant and jobless in no time. Now, which job will the cook go to then? You don't need thousands of mechanics or engineers just to maintain or repair an independent oven, which it could probably do largely on its own.
