Ultimately, AI under the control of an individual human is either as good as or as evil as that human. The technology itself is as fascinating as it is inevitable. What scares me is that control will not be in the hands of individual humans who can be held to account for their use or abuse of the technology. It will be in the hands of corporations. A corporatation involves humans; employees who follow policies enforced by supervisors at the direction of managers implementing goals set by executives who answer to board members who please stockholders who demand greater returns each successive quarter on their investment; but corporations are not humans. They have no conscience. They're intrinsically powerful, greedy systems which are difficult if not mostly impossible for any individual human to protect themselves against or to hold accountable. They are useful tools of commerce and industry, but only acceptably safe when minimally yet effectively regulated and overseen by an uncorrupted and disinterested monitoring and enforcing entity; something we have a terrible track record of maintaining in the past two centuries. Who's going to keep AI in check? Certainly not politicians or their bureaucrats. They're too cheaply bought by corporations.
