I get what Penrose is saying and I think I understand it (being conscious after 2 cups of coffee lol) but I still have a nagging feeling that in the absence of us discovering some completely different state of matter that underlies this conscious state, it might simply be the result of such enormously complex experience driven AI like processes that it is actually possible to replicate in a machine.
Or to paraphrase Arthur C Clarke, AI that is so advanced that to the relatively untrained observer it IS conscious.
Of course to be so far in advance of its creators ability to judge it the AI would need to have developed itself, but that’s already happening
