Glad you're open to debate. You should bring UBI back to the table.
I like you, Bernie. However, if that many jobs are at risk in the future, then these companies know that they are in a world of hurt financially. I don't think they want to further enrich themselves in the short term, just to fall not long after. If they don't have humans making money, then they can't really benefit. I am not concerned here, and these companies aren't stupid, so I am sure they see this coming as a problem. They can't produce if they don't have enough people making money to buy their product. It's that simple. I think what they are doing (some of them) is relying on the government to do something to raise the floor and share the wealth, because if not, they will surely fall.
There are many people who will still contribute even after most jobs are gone. I really wish politicians would stop trying to convince people that jobs=meanings. Like you said, hobbies exist, people have entrepreneurial spirit and will pursue something not being addressed or make something that already exists much better, and of course we have our creative artists.
There are a few ways to address this. Maybe in combination. Firstly, UBI. Use this tech to your advantage. We have A.I. agents that can handle administrative costs for the government with some human oversight. This takes billions of the price tag. Quit relying on military contractors as much and route most of the budget to Anduril, a product company that doesn't price gouge. with some adjustments (Avoid a wealth tax, use transactional taxes, works well with UBI and bulk purchases), UBI is very feasible today and will actually result in a surplus in revenue today if implemented right.
Another way, or maybe in combination. Subsidize or give citizens robots. If they are performative enough for most jobs, humans can send their robot to work. Or, they can have their robot work one job and the human can work another job, doubling their income. You'll probably subsidize if enacting UBI, would be too costly to make it free with UBI.
Maybe even give options. Rent to own robots or Autonomous vehicles subsidized for passive income.
If you were thinking to reduce hours with full pay, I think you should reduce the hours to 20-25, because you're right, the numbers are conservative.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I am glad you're not a Luddite, but as long as you're not too restrictive or hindering progress, Dems will hopefully regain power.
