I focused on neural net research during grand school back in the dark ages. I find it crazy that we are still using the same building blocks, e.g. multilayer perceptrons trained with backprop, to build the current AI models. Back then, it was understood that these were insufficient and not even close to modeling how biological neural nets work. Even Geoff Hinton wanted to throw away backprop. Maybe this is why it takes so much resources to scale up AI -we are using a brute force approach. Hopefully, there are researches working from first principles that will give us fundamental breakthroughs to get us closer to true -and efficient -AI.
