Steven, this is a fascinating and timely podcast on AI and its implications for the future. However, I wish you’d pushed more against Dr, Yampolsky’s assertions. He has a massive blind spot, difficult to see but fundamentally significant. Your stance seems to be one of awe. Not sure why this is the case. Could it be that he weaves a story which seems impenetrable? At the very least he should be required to define his terms - knowledge, for example - because it’s there that he dominates the discussion. There are multiple premises such as the one about knowledge. When they go unquestioned we’re liable to feel existential terror at the prospect of AI, AGI etc. None of us can predict the future. But getting a handle on our terms seems to be intelligent and a way to face the future with wisdom. And by the way, his is wrong about the number of “psychopaths” in the world. They’re actually a very small percentage of the total population. Next time…push harder. Make people like him work harder. After all, to dominate the narrative - the imagination - with predictions like his is to wield a kind of power we ought to question.
