I don't actually think this is entirely correct. The Luddites, from the point of view of English skilled labor, were correct. Wages did suffer, massively so, for large numbers of people. The industrial revolution was terrible for workers, and 1800s UK saw a serious slump in life expectancy. It has definitely not always been the case that automation has been good for workers.
