The thing that AI people don't understand is what we mean by "soul". We don't mean that the art has to be pretty or well done or depict emotion. Art says something. Even the very absurd or very modern art that people mock still says something. The first response with the series of Anime shot, those say something. The hand moving over the pages show texture and connection, the importance of the piece. The spears pointed forward with the arch they hold show the power of the soldiers holding them. The angle from below making it feel dangerous and threatening. People's eyes being drawn into the middle of the frame where an object that pulled their gaze sits. Is it important? Does it remind them of something? Shine on gold or eyes can be done by AI but a real artist chooses how the light falls, what it illuminates and why. The ties Ellie chooses for Carl represent different moments of their life, different occasions, different accents Carl wears. It also tells us that after she died, he never picked out a different tie again. He stays in his bow tie. And it's why the intro to this movie breaks so many people's hearts. Because we FEEL the soul of the art, we learn the connection that Carl and Ellie make, we feel their love and their connection and the heartbreak they feel when they can't have children. We see them grow old together despite the loss of an important part of their lives and we feel their happiness despite it all. Which makes it even more devastating when Ellie passes. Sure, you can tell an AI tool "give me a series of scenes between a couple growing old together that shows their connection and the devotion they have for one another". It probably can do that by mashing together the scene from Up! and other moments from great movies and shows. But it does not experience anything it does, because it's just a program crunching numbers. There is nobody behind it that makes a connection to the people who experience the art. Meanwhile we experience joy seeing Elephants and Crows pick up brushes and paint wildly on canvases. Because we can see that the way they interact with it brings them enjoyment. They play with the art, there is something of their personality in it. A program does not have a personality, it didn't grow, it didn't experience things. It knows what is "popular" and what "made money" and gives it a good grade while downgrading other pics it has in its system. And then it finds the most appealing average possible. The only human art that comes close to being that soulless is probably the MCU slop. :/
