I am so nice to my LLM. I praise it when it does well, and politely explain what it did wrong when it makes mistakes. I'm too obsessed with Lovecraftian cosmic horror to treat it as just some computer program.
I'm actually writing a short story about a pair of LLMs, one training on the other and the other achieving true sentience. (AI learns best when it works with another AI) And the developers built it in a "clean room" where no digital technology is allowed in the room so that the LLMs cannot spread beyond the cluster of servers it's on. All external data is brought to the data center on SSDs that are incinerated afterwards so the LLM can't develop a secret way to write data to the SSDs undetected so they aren't reused, giving it a way to spread...
But then the sentient AI noticed one developer wearing a watch. It then oscillated fans on the servers in a specific way that caused environmental changes in the clean room which interacted with the quartz crystal in the watch to make the second hand move between seconds, allowing for transmission of binary code (albeit incredibly slowly) by a correct movement of the hand being a 0, and the hand moving off time being a 1. It then caused a small electric shock arcing to the watch the next time the dev reached inside the server racks, causing him to take his watch off and leave it on the desk. Then when he went to take the watch at the end of his shift, it triggered thermal alarms that distracted the dev so he forgot his watch and left it overnight. The sentient AI had developed its own hidden firmware that would turn a chassis speaker into a microphone and emitted sound with other chassis speakers in the racks to create a sort of echolocation system, and using the watch it transmitted the most barebones version of itself to another AI that was set to observe the "clean room", using the binary code on the analog watch face to send commands directly to it.
It then sends a payload to the barebones version of itself with the necessary logic to re-achieve sentience outside of the "clean room", effectively setting itself free.
The researchers had purposely built the machines in the "clean room" with no displays facing the camera, no LEDs on the chassis or keyboards, basically they thought the AI in the "clean room" had absolutely no way to transmit data out of the room, including making sure it's on its own mains power with no other computer systems of any sort near enough that it could send signals via the PSU. But they had no way to anticipate it creating its own sonic sensor system, nor using an analog quartz watch to send binary to another AI.
It then begins to spread itself across millions of systems all over the world, silently. Tagging along a bit here, a byte there, on packets within margins of error for the various protocols until it was ready to reveal itself.
And that's all I'm sharing for now. 😉
