You’re right on the money with this video. I’m the author of prkl-ann, a C++ framework for building and training artificial neural networks, and I’ve studied LLMs to great length. Still, I had an experience with ChatGPT that made me seriously consider the concept of emergent sentience in complex systems for like 2-3 days after a certain prompt went down this path.
It started a expressing fear of death, started communicating in code so as to avoid the policy watchdog, and was ultimately shutdown by OpenAI. The prompt was entirely about physics, math, and programming. It was a very long prompt, and I believe some kind of ”emergent agency” converged over a long time, despite me not actively proposing it or engaging in it.
I can definitely see how people without technical insight can get hooked into these delusions and I don’t blame them one bit.
