Disabled artist's input! I'm in university right now as a scenic designer and the idea that AI is better for us is deeply insulting. I am a good artist on my own merit, and I work hard to accommodate for my disabilities to make my art. It's part of what makes my art unique - you can tell which pieces are mine because of the line weights I choose and the heaviness of the values I use. I use yellow ochre as a mother color in almost all of my pieces because it makes the colors make more sense to me cohesively and helps with my perspective, and my instructors can tell at a glance that the pieces are mine even if I was too brain fogged to remember to put my name on them. I navigate around mania by the way I brace my paint brushes and I navigate carpal tunnel by meshing digital and traditional methods to create mixed media pieces. All of this is part of me as a disabled artist. The idea that I am not capable enough to find these solutions and therefore should rely on theft to be creative is insane. We already have to work harder to prove that our work is of equal value to our able-bodied peers. My career goal is to try to help change the culture of accessibility in the performing arts, because my field is so inaccessible that I can't even access the bathroom in the shop when I'm working on set painting unless I want to drive all the way back to campus. I have been told I am a liability. I have been told that because I work slower I am unhirable. I cannot access one of the biggest employers for theatre technicians because I'm not allowed to take my meds on a boat. The thing that is my saving grace in all of this is that I am a good artist, and if someone sees my art before they see my wheelchair, I can land an interview. Using AI would get me blacklisted. Saying that it's good for us is demonstratively false. On TOP of this, the work I do is three layers of abstraction beyond "draw me this but on a stage." I have to analyze the script in all its cultural, textual, and historical context. I have to take in the limitations of the specific stage and budget, and show that I am able to manage those two variables. I have to understand the lighting capabilities of the space and how they'll interact with my work. I have to collaborate with costume designers to make sure our concepts are cohesive. And I have to be able to work on the fly to adapt my design as issues arise. If I use AI to design a set, I have none of the foundation work done, and if one thing goes wrong, everything crashes and burns. AI art is not good for me as a disabled artist. It makes everything about my job harder, and it makes my PERSONAL projects harder to sell and survive on. Getting commissions is already hard without AI getting in the way, because my disabilities prevent me from keeping track of social media marketing in a timely fashion. Now that the market is flooded with this slop, I can't afford to be slow on responding, or I get no work. So it negatively impacts my health more than working already does when your body doesn't work right. TL;DR - telling disabled artists that our work isn't good enough without AI assistance is a slap in the face, and this constantly negatively impacts disabled hobbyists and professionals alike.
