I don't think he should be calling himself a real artist by any means, but I do think his argument that AI is a tool for art is somewhat valid. I don't think a brush is anywhere near something like ai software but compared to a camera I see more similarities than differences. You could argue that the camera does all the work for you by capturing an image, but you as the photographer captures what the image contains, such as the place, people and/or objects, the mood, and so on. It certainly takes more skill to capture all of these aspects well in you're own photo compared to an ai prompt, but I think the methods have more in common than people have said.
