LAWS are not going to be outlawed, because there's no pressing reason to do so, and they will have battlefield applications as you described. CW were outlawed because they don't provide much advantage over conventional artillery and bombs, and nobody wants to wear those hot stinky CW suits on the battlefield. NW were almost banned because they could wipe out so many people so quickly, and ultimately were not because they could wipe out so many people so quickly, you just don't walk away from that capability in a competitive envronment. LAWS are a minor change in battlefield conditions and lethality, but will provide large advantages to first movers and equalize small vs large forces as seen in Ukraine. Given that the US is staring down the barrel of a conflict with a country with 3 times its population over that island where iphones come from, while having recruiting problems at home, no way we're going to leave this on the shelf. As birthrates collapse across the world at different rates, battlefied automation is going to play an increasing role in national security for a lot of countries.
