As an engineer and technology enthusiast who also loves art, I have a tough time with this. I think AI art could be a very powerful tool in the future but ultimately it would mean that a lot of artists who are paid for commercial uses of their art may need to find other lines of work. Whenever someone's line of work is able to be automated, there's always a lot of pushback at first by the people who originally did that work. Things like pottery , clothing design, and rugs would be some of the closer examples I can think of, where at one time these items were all made by hand by artists , and now they're able to be produced on a mass scale with machines. There are also a lot of art styles that are already being copied wholesale but just by other artists rather than people running software. Ultimately I don't believe that people will EVER stop buying art from artists they like , because there are people who believe that buying from a creator is worth paying extra money for, and there are people who are fine downloading a blurry pixelated image from google and using it as a phone background. As for the business side of things, where I'm assuming most professional artists make money, I think ultimately it'll probably need to be swayed by lawsuits rather than talking people out of using their art. But ultimately it sounds like what AI image generation companies are doing is completely legal , so until laws change, there may not be much that can be done about it. It sucks, but ultimately it seems to be more a matter of artists just not wanting others to mimic their styles rather than having a legal argument regarding copyrights.
