I don't think Dr. Tyson really understands the forces of capitalism that we are dealing with and he seems to have no understanding of economics. "AI will replace your job so we will just create new industries" is possibly one of the worst takes I have ever heard. We might create new stuff, but that doesn't mean we will need it. Just like we don't need the vast majority of things we are creating right now. Listen to Jason Hickel talk about the inefficiencies of capitalism for a while. I already know of people who might lose businesses they have built all their working lives due to AI. Are they just supposed to create some new bullshit and try to sell it to people? AI is not only highly energy and water intensive, something we desperately need to conserve at this stage of environmental catastrophe, it also hands unprecedented power to those who wield it, namely techno oligarchs and the politicians they are in bed with. It is a dire situation and unless we understand the risks and take steps to bring AI under public purview, the results can be disastrous. I suggest listening to Yanis Varoufakis talk about tehnofeudalism and community owned technology.
