When I saw an artwork 5 years ago, I could plug it into an AI image history searcher that scanned for its origins and spit out who the original artist was. Now, when you input an AI image into google, it can't tell you what its origins are, only that its probably an AI. Because the original artworks that that AI art is referencing, have been scrubbed off of the data it took. Its epistemologically (meaning, regarding the pool of public knowledge) erased the artist from off of their work. It removed the history from the product, like not documenting the children who make nikes and iphones. The less we know about the origins the less bad we have to feel about the exploitation.
AI companies could have kept the names of the "referenced" artists inside the meta data of the images. Its actually relatively easy and compact to do that. They chose not to.
