I have to disagree. We are screwed. No programmer fully understands an entire codebase—we master a small part in depth and know where to look for the rest to get the job done. Good AI can excel at this. The issue is that people dump the whole codebase on AI and then complain when it struggles.
Here’s the rub: AI lets a single programmer do far more, reducing the need for large teams. Take a project’s front end—split it into many modules. Do the same with the back end. AI can write each module faster and more reliably than a human. A person still integrates it all, but you don’t need tons of developers coding every block.
This applies to DevOps, QA, product management, manager, director, vice president, CEO—every business role. Senior developers might have a few years left, but once AI gains better memory, even that edge will vanish. In 5-10 years, most of the software development job will be gone.
