I think he underestimates mathematics' ability to model nature. Anything can be modelled with enough resolution to feel as natural as the source. AI also transcends rules, and there are tons of cases that prove that. He thinks it is just a line of code that works in an isolated room of limits. AI is a network of relations, which is very similar to the model of the brain. I believe giving the right of having consciousness to organic creatures and excluding any other form of life is a very narrow perspective. And yes, AGI will be a form of life.
