I dunno man the guy's clearly struggling to speak English as it's his second language.
Also, data science is a lot closer to mathematics than software development or computer science.
Should have asked him a bit about AI/ML concepts to keep it fair. I've met plenty of tenured professors who can't write anything but awful MATLAB but are highly respected.
Things like a "1-tuple" or an "empty class" are pretty esoteric.
