In the 1980s we had available an Expert system that would, upon being given make, model, year, and symptom(s) make a guess as to what needed repaired in a television. Its database was mostly service manuals and warranty repair data. To quote a military officer who was asked about sentience in AI: I wouldn't know how to code for that.
