Stable diffusion is open source. Anyone can contribute to it, anyone can download it and try out for themselves as much as they want to on their own computer. The latest version at that, it's now no longer in the hands of a single corporation but has become a collaborative project of the computer science world. I'm not sure from where you're getting that that strayed from the original research intent it held.
The constant framing of everyone creating this being "Big business" is just highly misleading. These things started in universities and continue to be worked on by the computer science community as a whole. Sure, business interest do arrive and there's people that will try to profit from it but there's plenty of passionate people working on these things for free, because they believe in what it can offer, that represent the foundation of what made these AIs possible.
