It is actually not normal, looking at human history over the centuries, to have distributed wealth like we do in todays society. It has always been a click of people sitting on all the wealth while the common people lived close to subsistence, just enough to survive. Innovation was slow because wealth couldnt be spread widely because most peoples labor just sustained life. Middle class was created when we entered modern industry manufacturing. We are living in an exception, not a rule.
