*AEROSPACE ENGINEER*
Geoffrey Hinton MIGHT BE VERY, VERY SMART but like all the other computer people I have ever met he is disconnected from reality. He's just NOT as disconnected as most of them are.
Perfect example is his comment about ditch diggers. When ditch digging was 100% manual it needed a lot of people. When it was mechanised, there was the guy on the digger, a guy in the truck to take the dirt away, a bunch of guys doing the concreting because the ditch was no longer a ditch it was a concrete lined storm water drain or culvert. YES previously technologies tended to INCREASE the capacity of everyone involved and although some people changed their jobs they didn't become unemployed that often. This is one of the things that has been sadly misunderstood about the robotics and automation brought to industries like manufacturing. It rarely cost overall employment, because it brought massive increases in productivity that allowed industries to grow and expand *OR* new industries to start and grow and expand.
To become unemployed requires managers and economists to step in with things like Milton Freidman's "Greed is Good." More jobs have been lost and unemployment created by managers chasing bonuses that any robot or machine ever did.
On Marc Andreessen
Like him I also graduated from the University of Illinois. The difference was I graduated (88) before he started there (89). So our paths never crossed, but I was well aware of the situation when he went there. *I know first hand how much money the American tax Payer pumped into things like National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA)* where the CRAY Supercomputers were. I know about the PLATO system (and used it) which was one of the first wide area data distribution systems and a forerunner of the Internet. You should all be grateful you never had to use it. *BUT OUT OF that INVESTMENT by the US TAX PAYER* came people like Marc Andreessen and Eric Bina, his co developer of MOSAIC the World's first practical web browser.
I do NOT hold his wealth against him or how he got it, because in developing MOSAIC that became Netscape he and Eric Bina brought a tremendous amount of good to the World. We would not be here watching this video and I can't be here right now typing this out without what they did. They deserve the right to have prospered from their work.
*WHAT I STRENUOUSLY OBJECT TO are his plans to deny the next generation of developers the same opportunity he got.*
And I can't scream that loud enough.
