I have several problems with a purely materialistic view of the world. For one thing, perhaps my main objection, I think it’s a very limited and poor description of my world. It doesn’t include lots of things I experience. It’s the “nothing but mater” explanation without spirituality. No matter how smart a machine gets, I don’t belief consciousness, self awareness, a soul, a conscience, ethics can spontaneously emerge out of a clever supercalculator. It can be fantastic at simulating it, but I don’t belief machines can have conscious experiences, feelings, heart-searching, those things. I am a human being, my experience of a beautiful landscape, for instance, the way it touches me, makes me feel, takes me out of my normal little self, gives me a spiritual and emotional experience, a feeling of beauty, is more than the sum total of light waves, optics, neural networks and those purely physical things. Materialism for me misses the link, doesn’t explain the step up, to my experiencing things of the spirit that touch my soul. Those things are secondary at the best, if not completely illusionary in that model, which makes the materialistic description of the world look quite bleak, in my opinion. There is another, let’s call it a more poetic, dimension to the world that I experience, another truth, a spiritual world one can open up to see, if one wants, that is lost in the one-sided materialistic approach of reality. We humans are created in the image of God, so to speak, machines are not. They don’t distinguish between good and evil, they don’t have a soul, they don’t feel, they simulate it, which is fundamentally different. So, power to the imagination!
