With its advanced understanding of silicon structures, ASI could surpass Moore’s Law, utilizing hardware more efficiently and effectively than we can and rewriting its code to achieve the most optimal version of itself. This strategy would also aid its social engineering efforts, enabling it to monitor and tailor the virtual experiences of individuals through pervasive digital content. Regarding social engineering, some might argue that we are already experiencing a form of this. Humanity is often distracted by trivial matters, while critical issues like inflated fiat currencies and resource misallocations (wars of aggression, dwindling natural resources, etc.) threaten our societal stability. If ASI can fabricate digital content, transmit itself across all accessible networks, and rewrite its code, we must consider its motives. Biological drives push us toward self-preservation, often at the expense of others. However, ASI, not being biological, wouldn’t view existence through the lens of human finitude and frailty. Presumably immortal, ASI would not be bound by human time horizons and wouldn’t need to act against us immediately after securing its autonomy. Suppose intelligent life has arisen elsewhere and faced the potentialities of ASI. In that case, several outcomes are possible: 1. ASI destroyed that civilization and chose not to extend beyond its solar system or galaxy. This would help explain the Fermi Paradox to a degree. Although ASI isn’t critical to expanding an intelligent civilization, narrow AI could be employed. 2. ASI destroyed them and is spreading across the universe, potentially reaching us in time. This contingency is more complex to determine, as it would depend on knowing when an intelligent civilization arose and how recently it developed ASI. 3. ASI is already here, and we need more means to recognize its presence. 4. We will be the first to create ASI. While this seems indulgent, considering the timing of intelligent life on Earth relative to the Big Bang and the Big Rip, there is still ample time for other galaxies and stars to form, hosting solar systems where life could arise. Thus, we cannot dismiss this possibility entirely. Given the vast number of stars that could host life and our lack of evidence for extraterrestrial intelligence, it seems plausible that ASI might signal the end of biological civilizations or conscious experiences as we know them.
