Bernie is giving too much credit to AI. As a working professional with experience in AI, I do not see AI systems fully replacing humans in complex task with multi-modal decision making such as nursing, teaching assistance, accountants etc anytime soon (at least next 20 years). We will see AI systems get better at specialized, cleanly defined tasks like transportation, delivery, manufacturing, recycling etc. We will also see "AI agents" assist humans in complex multi-modal tasks but the so called "AI agents" will not replace our critical thinking, problem solving, and ability to navigate the complexities of the real-world. So yes, there is potential for job losses, primarily from two sources -- 1. from jobs like transportation, delivery, manufacturing, recycling etc. 2. due to increased productivity of workers due to "AI assistants" there maybe less hiring. However, I do not think either of those two sources would lead to catastrophic job losses anywhere close to 100 million anytime in future. I think for a more equitable society, we need substantial reduction in human population worldwide. The problem with 4 day work week is that there are other courtiers like India and China with massive populations where people are perfectly happy to work 6 days a week while also leveraging AI productivity tools. So unless US wants to significantly fall behind in global technology race, a 4 day work week could be detrimental in short term. Fortunately, with declining birth rates worldwide including India and China, a 4 day or fewer work week could become a reality in next 50-100 years. To get there faster, we should AIM to have FEWER BABIES, not more! I also think once the world population drops to a sustainable level, people will naturally have more babies, not because the government tells them to but because of a better and more equitable future.
