Great interview. I can’t help but ask why someone so smart is still a materialist. Assigning so much importance to “intelligence that can replicate brain function” seems to negate the fact that the code of awareness of this intelligence, of consciousness, has not been broken or understood. It stands quite separate to brain function and has no identifiable locus. I doubt super intelligent AI is capable of understanding this far more significant intelligence which pervades our experience. At this stage of life it seems a noble endeavour to explore the witness of this all. That which is aware. Is it destructible? Is it of this materialistic realm ? It is to my experience the most significant scientific question. We have no true understanding of the mechanics of life in the dimension we inhabit despite arbitrarily being able to replicate it. We truly do not understand a cell nor a body and how smart the construction is nor what truly drives it. Materialism is grasping at a simple answer. We are ever humbled by all we do not know and understand with our limited faculties if we admit to it. Creation, the matrix, the simulation or whatever you use to try to describe creation is beyond our understanding and certainly that of any artificial intelligence supposedly created by us. In our response to this miracle all around us, choosing a reductionist approach seems wasteful. One hopes that more of us will try to expand into more conscious awareness to appreciate how immense and expansive it is. Our “knowledge” seems regressive when one explores a little.
