A lot of people "kept around" for employment with the advent of AI automation of a lot of fields/industries are going to be the token diversity hires (per the 1964 Civil Rights Act basically violating the 1st Amendment's guarantee of Right of Association, because it let the government dictate to private citizens and businesses that they cannot determine for themselves who to hire and fire or determine who they will serve as a customer, which produced the "affirmative action" (*coughdiscriminationcough) quotas. That's going to look far more ugly than the current landscape, because at that point, you're going to have high levels of unemployed people of the undesirable traits (*coughwhitecismalechristianeuropeanorasiancough) being obviously discriminated against by being fired because they don't advance diversity quotas.
