Recently I've been on a big kick about the power of "interpretation."
And due to some of the comments here, I realized that it strongly applies to my feelings on Ai generation.
One comment talked about an artist who drew still lifes of objects on the same chair over and over. And that the artist began to hate the chair, and that began to reflect in the artwork.
The thing is though, that hatred may not actually be visible behind that art. It's still there, it's a part of it, but you may never be able to see what about it portrays that hatred, or even know that it exists.
But that is the power of interpretation.
We can see things where there are none. We can find meaning an feeling where it was not intended.
We can _miss_ feelings and stories that are there. Stories we will never know. Grand stories, insignificant stories.
Every piece of art, even the smallest doodles, have a story behind them. They have humanity baked into them.
We already agree and know that Ai "art" lacks any humanity.
But what I haven't seen discussed is that it also _robs us of ours._
We can still look for meaning in Ai art. We can interpret emotion, thoughts, and feelings that could never actually exist.
There is no story. There is no meaning. But we can still find our own.
_We can interpret humanity that doesn't exist._
It's a betrayal. We use our humanity to engage with art. We analyze, we interpret. But there is nothing worth interpreting.
We wasted our time looking for meaning in something that has literally none.
And I think that's why I get such a punch in the gut every time I learn something was Ai-generated. I feel robbed. I feel betrayed.
Because I looked for the humanity in it. And maybe I thought I saw some. But in the end my time was wasted.
