Well I do like AI (used properly) it speeds up my job significantly(programming) but also causes some junior people to send me absolute BS asking "why is this not working" to which I'm very tempted to answer, because you have no clue what any of it means...
However, to the point, I did use image gen AI few times and I did like results. I think you can call people who are good at prompting and selecting images artists. But it's a different art than creating that image by yourself. It is as different as painting Vs photography. And yet we do call photographers artists while what they do is push a button. No doubt many portrait painters lost their jobs once photography became common place and that is sad. I do feel bad for all the artists that will loose jobs because of it (and myself too, programmers will be replaced by AI as well eventually), but such is the cost of progress and history shows we're always better paying it. Not everyone will be replaced. We still have people creating portraits by hand and we will continue to have people creating visuals in future.
rhere is definitely something to be said for AI being trained on a thousand images by some artist and then making a billion more "in his style" with no benefit to him. There should be some mechanism for these people who created this art in the first place to be compensated. That is the only thing about AI I think we're doing wrong.
23:22 I'm perfectly fine with AI replacing my work, I'll find something else to do of value. I'm not defined by my work. I worked as a guy carrying buckets of sand on construction sites, as a security guard and an electrician's mate, a guy fixing PCs, an "integration engineer", a programmer and a "solution architect" at a big co. Which of these is my identity? Some of these I liked, some not. The work does not define us. I guess it is different for artists.
I highly doubt we will have a world of universal income, but if we did I'd be very happy in it. I have too many hobbies and not enough time. So many things I'd like to do and learn. One thing AI is great for is as a teacher. You don't understand some science concept? You can keep asking AI to simplify it for you, or phrase it differently all day until you finally get it. It really is a huge multiplier for our minds abilities.
But I doubt we'll achieve AGI or that LLMs will continue to get better and better by just scaling up. We've already thrown all text ever written at them to get here and all the text created from now on is useless (you can't train AI on AI created stuff). So the ability is self limiting.
