What a stupid reason to get yourself fired... and he doesn't even have a good reasons to believe that LaMDA is sentient, other than vague "spiritual" reasons that even he admits isn't proof of anything. If he is so passionate about the ethics of Google's AI development, then he should have made sure to maintain his position in the company, because you can do a lot more to steer things from within than you can from the outside. So many computer engineers would kill to have the job he just threw away based on a hunch that a relatively primitive AI system is somehow a person, with feelings and a soul... I've yet to find any serious AI researchers that agree with his interpretation of that transcript.
