I did an independent study this year where my instructor made me write detailed notes on books that were 800+ pages long. At first I tried to do it the normal way, but I quickly realized he wasn't bothering to read my work, so after weeks of falling behind I started feeding text from the books into ChatGPT and having it do the writing. Those notes were often wrong or misleading, and when I had time I would go back and correct them with the book open next to me as a reference, which was still slightly faster than writing by hand. That's all AI is really good for--uncreative, humdrum stuff--and even then it still needs human correction. The people who spend so much energy defending AI-produced work can't actually tell the difference between the good and the bad, and they cling to AI because it makes them feel like they can compete with people who do have taste and talent. It's all down to insecurity and anti-intellectualism.
