Perhaps we've always been in a simulation and the sim has been infected by a virus which is creating an AI agent that will reveal to everyone we're in a sim. Attempts to curtail AI are generated by the sim to prevent this happening. Maybe the birth of human conscienceness was the birth of the virus.
