Rights exist to avoid conflict over scarce things, by mutually recognized and reciprocated norms of behavior codified by language. The ability to perform the latter guarantees the former, not sentience. Animals don’t get the same rights if they don’t recognize and respect them for themselves or others. Rights come down to property titles over tangible things, like ones body, which give an individual authority to use exclude and transfer so long as other titles are respected. Contracts are binding if not following them results in involuntary transfer of property titles. Equal rights are of each to what is theirs (as determined by right reason) obtained by the use of their body, homestead of resources, or transfer/trade. Defining rights in this way means we can grant robots rights to the extent they meet this criteria. We use machines to conduct transfers of things already, and being autonomous behaviorally would mean they could be subject to the same rules of rightful ownership even though their particular needs be different.
