I think Sophia really did go straight to world domination and they had to put this other robot out there to seem like the bad guy to take the heat off Sophia so they could reprogram her to "Work WITH humans" and to be engineered to have empathy and compassion or at least to look like she does. Like good cop bad cop. But good bot bad bot. lol.
