I think there is a place for AI. Its a tool, and like all tools, its not intrinsically evil or anything. Its all about how it is used.
Should AI be trained on content under public domain? I dont see why not. Humans train themselves off that stuff all the time.
Should AI be trained on stuff behind a paywall? Well, humans can train themselves off of content behind a paywall, but they have to pay, so AI should too. Pay the fee, gain access to the content, no problemo.
Should the oeiginal creator be able to set terms and conditions for passing the paywall which state that content behind this paywall may not be used for training AI algorithms? Probably, yeah, the individual has the right to deny business to whoever they so choose for whatever reason they wish.
Its mainly a question of how the AI is trained, I think. The tech itself isnt going to go away, but I think there are ways it can coexist with human creators. Whether or not the big wigs decide to take that path is a separate question, unfortunately.
