i would remind neil that there aren’t 29,000 people still alive, there are 35,000. the 6,000 people who die died for completely different reasons as the 35,000 did, i don’t think you can say that those 6,000 people who got obliterated by a self driving car are guaranteed to have also died from a human driver. i don’t think we should think of human lives as interchangeable.
granted, i’m also someone who is just plain opposed to self driving cars as a solution to any problem. if we want to make roads more efficient we shouldn’t be trying to optimize individual cars and drivers, because we can’t have everyone own a gas car due to climate change and there’s not enough lithium that can be reasonably used for everyone to own electric. we could start by making the cars larger, to fit more people in. hook them up together, so that bumper to bumper traffic stops being an issue. place them on special roads designed for them, perhaps even include some sort of rail system that matches the gauge of the wheel rims to eliminate the need for tires and prevent them from spinning out of control…
