The idea of AI becoming sentient i think really more comes from the"arrogant" man creating something as arrogant as him, so it's not that the dream for artificial intelligence to become sentient, the fear is that it will happen by accident and then the "dream" becomes a nightmare.
To be honest though, the idea itself i think is more harmful than the actuality. Something like the people are so scared over AI they run in fear of their new phone once it imitates a personality for the first time
