I'm thirty eight and have shifted so many industries. I'm back in retail again, only for a few months thus far and already having an existential crisis despite it not even being the worst job. This idea that my job role is always my destiny and I have to give up my dreams because AI is stealing away all the creative jobs anyway is a false one. I just keep thinking prematurely that I am a lost cause because my art education was squandered by taking menial jobs in other industries to survive. I feel like my abilities are always beyond acceptable yet can't find the right jobs where they are fully applicable and there is always just ONE piece of software or one piece of the resume or the work portfolio or the website that I am short of to prove I am worthy of landing a 'proper' creative job like my fellow alumni. I am a traditional artist first and digital artist second but I am unafraid to learn new things. But I just feel like with the advent of things like Canva and other such template websites getting a design job or illustrator role is so much more devalued. I wish to find the self discipline and the persistence to track down and clasp onto a professional creative career that keeps me alive I enjoy. That's a tall order though and a privileged luxury for anyone really if you think about it. Most jobs are not fun or about making lots of money overnight, they are drudgery to keep someone alive and y'know, that's okay. We are not bad people if we don't achieve our dreams, nor unable to ever achieve our dreams, if we settle for less, whether that is permanent or temporary.
