Hopefully this is a white-pill for many of you.
AI "art" isn't going to last.
I'm not saying this as someone who can see the future or anything, but there are some trends and rhetoric that I've seen that is following a pattern we've seen before. Who remembers 3d TVs and how they'll be the future of movie and show watching? Everything was about 3d about 10 years ago or so, and now no one even mentions. It's the same thing with the Metaverse, Crypto, NFTs, Blockchains, "The Cloud" (which I find particularly hilarious because it was basically the same thing as mainframes and terminals/thin clients from back before the internet really took off,) and a bunch of other things over the years.
AI has been hyped up to the point of being a bubble. There are some good things coming out of it, namely analytic tools, modeling (as in an abstraction of the real world) tools, and research tools, but the generative stuff? The stuff that's intended to reduce headcount? That isn't likely to last. The FTC is investigating OpenAI and other AI companies for overselling their AI's capabilities and it's looking like they are also in increasingly hot water over their data collection. While AI has gotten better, they are running into issues where they can't filter out AI generated images and writing, and projects like Nightshade are being used to poison the well even more. On top of that, AI "art" is the very definition of derivative slop. You can't create anything new with AI, not really. All AI can do is make an image that is a probable fit for what you put into the prompt. Eventually, if people stop making art, you get into that incestuous self-referential issue where the AI is only using older versions of itself to configure itself. When that happens, it'll eventually devolve as it can only use the output of other AI artbots.
A lot of the stuff I've heard about AI mirrors what was said about 3d TVs and Movies being the future of cinema. It also mirrors the rhetoric around Cryptocurrencies. The thing is that the superficially beautiful images AI can generate now will always lack that human touch, that individuality of an artist's style. It lacks intention and discernment. It lacks emotion. I think people will see that, and I don't think most will like it.
