The disrespect of digital art is dumb. Painting is harder than drawing with a pencil. Making a figure out of clay and then cooking it is easier than taking a block of stone and carving it into a statue. Art and the validity of a medium isn't defined by difficulty and the argument against AI isn't really about its ease. It's about doing anything at all. I firmly define art as the practice of having an idea and translating it to reality piece by piece. Obviously this includes traditional and digital art both - digital may have tools to make certain things happen more easily but it is still up to the artist to know how to use them to build up their artwork. It includes paintings and sculptures and figures made of clay. It also includes stories, as an author chooses each word to tell the story in their mind. It includes collages, because you have to have the ability to construct something new out of the little fragments of existing things. It includes all kinds of mediums, even those that people don't consider art. I don't believe it includes AI - listing off the things that describe your idea isn't translating it into reality. The AI generating it is doing that, and because it doesn't have a thought component, I don't think it counts as "the art the machine made." Plus the method is an algorithm, not the actual skill of building up something that only exists in your head. Even if it did, it would be like taking a commissioned piece and saying it's your art because you had the idea for it. I'd also say the reason writing counts as art for a story and not prompts is that they're creating something different. A story is not describing something visually and that's it. It does describe things visually often, but really what it's creating is a narrative, a whole fictional world and timeline and story for you to follow, characters to be attached to, and just generally so much more than just a still image. Words CAN build that up. Describing what an image consists of, not even in the words that a writer would use for a human to visualize but the words a robot would refer to, isn't building up the image and translating it into reality, because pictures aren't comprised of words. Just because people say an author "painted a picture" when they visually describe things doesn't mean they actually painted or drew anything.
