It only works for specific types of training, the kind done on a large scale. It doesn't really work against hobbyists doing style transfer, img2img, LoRA, etc. The big companies like OpenAI might care about not being able to make new models, but plenty of hobbyists are satisfied with the current free and open tools and models and will continue to use them. You use the example of NFTs - NFTs are still around, they just had their bubble burst. When a bubble bursts it doesn't mean the thing goes away completely, it just means the hype isn't there and so there are fewer or less of it around. Large studios that own copious amounts of IP won't be affected by Nightshade. They were and will be affected by unions instead. It won't be as prolific, and it won't be as hyped, but AI will stick around.
