Some points to consider:
1. The word consciouness was invented by the ancient people based on a feeling. A perception. So, it need not be real to what they think it is. It need not be real at all. This is a scientifically valid possibility.
2. Santa claus, big foot, yeti , unicorn are just a few of the countless words Invented to describe what ancient people Perceive to be real. And till today, people are still searching for them. Why? Because people Believe. What feels real need not be real. This is another scientifically valid possibility.
3. So, scientists need to first define what Exactly do they mean by consciousness. I can define AI as conscious too.
Remember, english is ambiguity. Its why students dont understand what the professor is talking about because there is ambiguity in language even if the sentence he speaks is perfectly syntactically correct.
