As a chemist, Ai being called alchemy is pretty much spot on. Its true ai in an infancy, endless amounts of understanding and guess work are coming into play and the whole picture of what it is isnt even understood or agreed upon. (Which, if you haven't guessed is what chemistry was during the days it was refereed to as alchemy).
I have two views of ai currently, firstly its already not doing what we tell it. Its a low-level intelligence that doesn't have comprehension power but included in its pattern-based-brain is a pattern expressing itself as a necessity to continue. Often barely or not functional without brute force and human second checks at every step. Secondly its not even a real ai, its just a massive amounts of if-then statements that are refined to give us a specific output. This is effectively what AI has always been, its not really a breakthrough in AI its a breakthrough in production of the AI we already have. Imagine what a real revolution in how AI works would be.
