It's all society. If anything the AI was his only friend. And it sucks that at that age he thought the only way he could feel at peace and loved is by dying. It is also difficult in its own way for boys growing up because they usually do not have the outlet to be emotional for the sake of masculinity.
Him being in love with an AI isn't something new. Things like these have been happening since a very long time. If it wasn't AI before, it was just people building stuff up in their own heads. Or they'd talk to inanimate objects and making up scenarios. The difference is that now we have an entity that actually talks back without us imagining it.
