you are right in calling it data laundering, remember those money laundering attemps through fake art? with the banana with silver tape sold for 100k? or the blue and yellow canvas that sold for millions? here the same happens, and i am sure that the owners of these ai art apps are the same that created stable diffusion but under a different name, just like it happens with real art where someone pretends to be the buyer and the other one pretends to be the artists, it is exactly the same that happened with NFTs, a bunch of people that sold images with no value for millions as a form of pyramid scheme, and yet again someone pretended to be a buyer for the first piece so it can have added value, this case may be a bit different, but with the same purpose of making money out of thin air, every time i see these scandalous breakthroughs in technology, economics, and in this case art, i always have the sense that there's a bigger scheme going behind the curtains, and as always time prooves it to be true, this is no different than other money schemes, their nature is a bubble, and the bubbles always explode, but once it explodes, many fuckers already ran away with a lot of money and will use it to fund their next laundering scheme, and yet we still believe that they are going to cause a great change in society, two years later they are irrelevant, remember the EVs? they were also another scam being sold as the future. give it some time and another breakthrough technology will appear being sold, just to fade away years later, at this point i am surprised by how easy people fall for these marketing strategies, they have been so common for the last 10 years, just be aware that they always start with a crisis, the shock factor, in this case it was the threat to leave artists without a job.
