People often do not pay for seeing books, movies, etc., while even avoiding seeing ads on the internet, all of which inspires them to make something of their own from all of that gathered information, while content creators on the internet often live from citing other sources. Still, people at least reward their favorites, if they can afford it. AI companies should do the bare minimum of buying an ebook / movie / rewarding artists for every product they use for their AI training in a similar way as people who watch Youtube without ads at least support creators on Patreon-like services monthly, or do a time contribution that usually exceeds the money creators would make from viewers watching every video with ads... The main issue here is that artists are not compensated in any way for their content being used for AI training, not that they were not asked if AI companies are allowed to use their content, because if people don't need to ask for permission to use someone's content for their inspiration or information they are citing in their own content, neither should AI... You may think that such small contributions from AI companies won't matter, but there are thousands of AI companies or companies that are just training AI as part of their company's toolset at this moment, while every purchase of content forwards such content within an algorithm that then makes it more likely to also get attention from real people... The fact that governments are enforcing double standards by turning a blind eye to companies, while happily prosecuting people for copyright infringement, will only increase the divide between classes, and normalize piracy even among people who are well off, which will ultimately hurt everybody, because if the wealthiest do not care about the intellectual ownership of others, why should they???
