Geoffrey Hinton’s view that AI will lead to mass unemployment is flawed. He assumes that the labor market is a zero sum game, and that the new technology will simply eliminate jobs without creating new jobs. The record of history is clear that our economy is a positive sum game, and new technology leads to higher living standards and new job opportunities.
Recall when the invention of the automobile. People worried about blacksmiths and carriage makers being displaced. Yet the reduction in Blacksmiths jobs was offset many fold by the new jobs in auto manufacturing, auto repair and auto sales. And then there was the knock on increase in road construction, gas stations, convenience stores and motels.
