Fabulous interview with Geoffrey Hinton. It wasn’t just the AI or its potential impact that stayed with me — it was the reminder of our humanity. Hearing him talk about the time he lost with his family really landed. It’s something many of us are guilty of: working hard to provide, while quietly losing sight of what matters most. I was also struck by his honesty about joining Google partly out of concern for how his family would support themselves — such a real and relatable motivation, and one that puts his reflections now into even sharper focus. His humility, openness about uncertainty, and determination to do what he can to reduce the risks AI may pose over the coming decades really stood out. It’s a shame this reckoning has come so late, but it’s also understandable given his desire to make sure his family were okay. That sense of responsibility — and the idea that this is something we all share collectively — feels very different to some of the motivations driving parts of the AI movement today. I don’t have faith that others’ motivations are always in the same place, and that worries me. We face a real risk of widening the wealth gap and creating even greater inequality. A powerful reminder of what really matters: family, humility, collective responsibility, and trying to leave things in a better place.
